In the fall, male elk grow large, branching antlers. They shed them each winter and grow new ones again in spring. Their thick brown coats help them stay warm in colder climates. With long legs made for moving through snow and wet ground, elk can easily search for food like grasses, bark, and twigs.

Elk have a short neck, tall shoulders, long ears, and a distinctive nose shape. They also have a flap of skin under their throat called a “bell.” While they are usually calm plant-eaters, elk can protect themselves with strong kicks if they feel unsafe.
